[Bookplate for Jac Balfour Paul Ado] Using black ink on white paper, the background of this pictorial bookplate portrays a window frame and windowsill. The top left side of the window is latticed, below which is an image of a rocky mountain and forest above which the sun is rising or setting. On the right side of the window frame is a shelf with three books. Leaning against the shelf is an unravelled scroll reading "In Soli / tudine / Solamen" [comfort in solitude]. Below this text is a lit lamp. On the windowsill are three figures. From left to right, the first figure is standing, nude and holding a comedy mask to its face. The second nude is sitting holding a cape over its shoulder (on the cape is a heraldic emblem: The shield is argent with a rampant lion). The third figure is sitting with its right leg crossed over the left leg, clothed in a judge/lawyer's wig, clothed in robes and holding a large open book in its lap. 2. [Bookplate for Henry Neville Gladstone] This is an armorial bookplate with a rampant demi-griffin (rising from a wreath), which in its dexter claw, clutches a palewise dagger. "Fide et virtute" [by faith and valour] is written on a banner above the griffin. 3. [Bookplate for John Somers by James Ross] This heraldric bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. At the centre of the escutcheon is an inescutcheon, which is also divided quarterly and features charges of cross crosslet fitched and beasts. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant, each with a dancette collar. Above the escutcheon is a Baron coronet, and below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. This bookplate is similar to BP MUR ENG P S664a, which is presumably owned by the same individual after his rise to title. 4. [Bookplate for Almeric Hugh Paget] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a cross, argent (silver), between four eagles displayed. The cross is charged with five lions passant guardant. Above the escutcheon is a capless-crown denoting baron status, and above the crown is a peer helmet, positioned three-quarters, with mantling radiation from it and surrounding the escutcheon. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger, rampant. At dexter and sinister are two men, each holding a flag charged with a cross patee. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. Below entire arms is another banner, with bookplate owner's name and title. 5. [Bookplate for George Paget] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are sable (black) and charged with a cross, argent (silver), between four eagles displayed. The cross is charged with five lions passant guardant. Quarters two and three are azure (blue), with a chevron or (gold) between three lion heads, erased, two over one. Above the escutcheon is a closed esquire helmet, positioned en profile, with mantling radiating from it, surrounding theescutcheon. Above the helmet is a straight wreath, charged with a heraldic tyger, rampant. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 6. [Bookplate for John Lomar] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, parted per cross. Quarters one and four are parted per pale ; on the left, or (gold), and the right, sable (black). The quarters have a bend cotised, ermine, charged with three escallops apiece. Quarter two is argent (silver), charged with a gryphon rampant. Quarter three is argent, with a cross, sable, with engrailed borders. The quarter is charged with four roundlets, two over two (cantoned). Above the escutcheon is a curved wreath, charged with a crown vallary, and a demi-lion, its arms erect, clutching an escallop. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 7. [Bookplate for Robert Edward Lord Petre] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a simple bend, or (gold), charged with two escallop at dexter base and sinister chief. The escutcheon is charged with an inescutcheon at center, divided per cross. Quarter one is gules, with a simple bend, argent (silver), charged with six cross crosslet fitched. Quarter two is gules, charged with three lions. Quarter three is chequy, azure (blue) and argent. Quarter four is gules, charged with a lion rampant. Above the entire escutcheon is a coronet denoting the rank of baron, and supporting the escutcheon at dexter and sinister are two lions rampant reguardant. Beneath the escutcheon s a banner, with Latin motto within, and below motto the bookplate owner's name and title. Background of crest is azure. 8. [Bookplate for Henry Lloyd] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), with a bordure bezant (or, gold) engrailed. The shield is charged with a lion rampant, or. Above the escutcheon is a straight wreath, charged with a 'pelican in her piety' (a pelican feeding her young). Below the straight wreath hangs a banded scarf, as well as a garland of leaves, which hang about the escutcheon. Below the escutcheon are two branches tied together which frame the lower half of the crest. 9. [Bookplate for Lord Francis Gray by Daniel Lizars and William Home] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, gules (red), charged with a lion rampant, with an engrailed bordure, argent (silver). The shield is supported by a lion rampant guardant on each site. Above the shield is a crown denoting baron status, and directly above the crown is a crest of an anchor upon a straight wreath. Immediately below the shield is another crest, a swan, also upon a straight wreath. Extending out from the bottom of the shield are two banners, with bookplate test within. The bookplate is bordered by an elaborate leaf design. 10. [Bookplate for John Somers] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per quarter, with quarters one and four sable (black), with a chevron argent (silver), charged with three antlers, two over one. Quarters two and three are vert (green), with a dancette fess ermine. [Bookplate] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross. Quarters one and four are sable (black), charged with a dove holding an olive branch upon a mountain. Quarters two and three are or (gold). Supporting the escutcheon are two lions, positioned rampant queue-fourche. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, dexter, with grate closed, indicating a peer status. Upon the helmet, is a crown with another dove holding an olive branch, along with mantling. Below the escutcheon is a banner, with Latin motto within. 12. [Bookplate for Albert Prince by Dempsey and Carroll] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, with quarters one and four also divided per cross. Within quarters one and four, the sub-quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with three lions passant guardant (for England). Sub-quarter two is or (gold), with a tressure-flory-counter -flory, charged with a lion rampant (for Scotland). Subquarter three is azure (blue), charged with a harp decorated with harpy figure features, stringed (for Ireland). The entire escutcheon is charged with a bar dovetailed, or a label, a cadency mark indicating being the eldest son (during his father's lifetime). Quarters two and three have a barry of ten, or and sable (black), with a bend in the shape of a ducal crown (without the cap). Surrounding the escutcheon is a garter, with first French motto within. Above the escutcheon is a royal crown. Supporting the escutcheon at dexter is a lion guardant, charged with a label. The entire achievement is surrounded by very fine lines, giving the impression of shadow. 13. [Bookplate for Dunbar of Westfield by C. Norton] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, divided per cross, the upper half gules (red) and or (gold), the lower half or and gules. Each quarter consists of a border ; quarter 1 and 4 are bordered with argent (silver) and heraldic roses, and charged with a lion rampant. Quarters 2 and 3 have a narrow border decorated by trefoil, charged with three round figures apiece. The escutcheon is supported by two lions rampant at dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a steel helmet, placed three-quartered (indicating esquire status). Above the helmet is a crest of a dexter arm proper (bare) upon a wreath. From the helmet flows elaborate mantling. Above the crest are two crowns with the Latin motto above. Below the escutcheon and supporters is a banner with an additonal Latin motto within. 14. [Bookplate for M. Nazapen] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with three mullets at fess point and a crescent below, held aloft by two cubit arms. The escutcheon is supported by lions, positioned rampant guardant at both dexter and sinister. Above the escutcheon is a helmet, positioned at a direct front view with a grated helm. Upon the helmet is a ducal coronet, from which three large plumes extend, along with elaborate mantling. Above the mantling and supporters are two crests: at dexter, a straight wreath is charged with an arm embowed with armour, clutching a scimitar. At sinister, a straight wreath is charged with arm embowed, clutching a Scottish flag. Below the escutcheon is a banner containing the Latin motto. 15. [Bookplate for Garnet Joseph Wolseley by Charles William Sherborn] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a talbot passant, gules (red), and a mullet above at centre chief. The escutcheon is supported by a wolf, rampant clutching swords at dexter and sinister. The escutcheon is set within a garter-like setting, from which various military medals hang. Above the escutcheon is a viscount coronet, sans the cap, with a grated helmet at three-quarters, further delineating the rank of viscount. Upon the helmet rests a ducal coronet, which is charged with a wolf's head. Behind the wolf is a small banner with first Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Wolseley, Co. Stafford, Barts.), and below the supporters and escutcheon is a second banner, with second Latin motto within (the family motto of Wolseley of Mount Wolseley, Co. Carlow, Barts.), along with a larger banner with bookplate owner's name and title. Elaborate mantling radiates from the helmet, and the entire bookplate is encased in a ribbed border. 16. [Bookplate for Edmund F. Bourke by T. Welch] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon quartered per cross. The dexter chief and sinister base sections contain a gules (red) cross on an or (gold) background. At the dexter chief of each cross is a lion rampant. The dexter base and sinister chief sections are each divided per pale, with an argent (silver) dexter side and a gules (red) sinister side. In the middle of these two sections is a lion rampant surrounded by three fleur-de-lis, two over one. Sitting atop the shield on a curved crest wreath is a cat guardant with leash. Below the shield is a banner containing the Latin motto. 17. [Bookplate for John Guilton] This heraldic bookplate consists of an escutcheon divided per cross or quarterly. Quarters one and four are gules (red), charged with a tree and three geese, two over one. The quarter also has a chief reversed (lower position) charged with a fish naiant upon water. Quarters two and three are gules, divided per chevron in argent (silver), charged with stars argent, two over one ; the quarter also has a chief or (gold), charged with an eagle displayed. Above the escutcheon is a ducal coronet, and a dragon rampant positioned from within the crown. 18. [Bookplate for Earl Gower by Griffiths and Weigall] This heraldic bookplate consists of a escutcheon, divided per cross or quarterly. Quarters one and four are argent (silver) with bars, gules (red) and charged with a cross patonce, sable (black). Quarters two and three are azure (blue) charged with leaves, two over one. The escutcheon is supported by two wolves rampant. Upon the escutcheon is a crown of earl status (minus the internal cap). Above the escutcheon is a crest of a wolf passant upon a straight wreath. Below the escutcheon is a banner with Latin motto within. 19. [Bookplate for John Keeling] This heraldic bookplate consists of a Chippendale-styled escutcheon, sable (black), charged with a lion rampant. The lion holds an inescutcheon, argent (silver), charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is crested by a demi-lion atop a mural coronet, again holding an inescutcheon, argent, charged with a cross fitchy. The escutcheon is bordered by a decorative floral design, and at dexter, a dragon is positioned at the upper half. Flowers are present on the opposite side. Below the escutcheon, but within the floral design, the Latin motto is featured in a banner. 20. [Bookplate for P. I. P. Sherburne by Elvey] This bookplate, in black ink, consists of an escutcheon divided quarterly. The first and fourth quadrants, vert (green), are charged with an eagle, displayed. The second and third quadrants, argent (silver), are charged with a lion, rampant. Above the escutcheon is a straight crest wreath, topped by a unicorn's head, horned and couped.
